Team NPS,

2022 was a year of moving forward.  As we wind down and prepare for 2023, I want to take this opportunity on behalf of Provost Gartner and our senior leadership to thank you all for your dedication to our mission, your hard work and many accomplishments.

This is my fourth year as your NPS President and I can say with confidence that it was a turning point for our institution. We worked hard to increase our curricula and research alignment to higher guidance, while restructuring NPS to be more responsive to Fleet requirements. We sharpened our financial planning, launched our campus modernization, and expanded our strategic partnerships with industry and academia – all of which strengthened our institution and set the stage for our envisioned future.

As I reflect on the year, I cannot list all we have done together, but I would like to share a few highlights in the enclosed Year in Review. I encourage you to read it in order to get a sense of the breadth of activity and impacts you are making.

What collectively stands out to me is the great teamwork and dedication across NPS that enabled another year of outstanding progress and transformation.  This work in parallel with our modernization efforts is developing NPS into a leading 21st century education institution while laying the foundation for NPS to grow as a center for naval innovation.

Poignantly, we were also saddened last year by the loss of several colleagues, though buoyed by shared accomplishments and recognition celebrated with others. We worked to help each other and inspire the next generation, paying it forward through your remarkable efforts as community leaders and volunteers, including promoting STEM education and internships.

Looking forward… 2023 promises to be another pivotal year.  We will continue to strengthen our institution so that we may advance more deliberately on three core dimensions of our strategic framework: 1) Extend the reach of graduate education, 2) Increase the impact of our research, and 3) Lead a naval innovation ecosystem with our industry and academic partners. This and other transformation efforts at NPS contribute to the Navy-wide “Get Real, Get Better” campaign.

Together we are building the future of NPS – a place “where science meets the art of warfare.”

With great respect and in abiding service,

Ann E. Rondeau, Ed.D.
Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.)
President, Naval Postgraduate School
