NPS and other military and government organizations have released guidance supporting the safe, secure, and ethical use of generative AI. This guidance is subject to revision as the technology and threats evolve; check regularly to ensure that you are adhering to the latest guidance.

  • NPS Interim Guiding Principles for Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools
    This memorandum from the Provost and Chief Academic Officer of the Naval Postgraduate School to faculty, students, and staff provides interim guiding principles for use of generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT in academic work. The document encourages exploration of generative AI tools in teaching, learning, and research but emphasizes that they must be used ethically and safely.
     
    Students are expected to preemptively ask their faculty members about allowed use; faculty are expected to be clear about what they allow and disallow.
  • NPS Academic Honor Code
    This instruction defines the academic honor code for Naval Postgraduate School students. The basic principles outlined in the code have not changed in the wake of widespread access to GenAI tools.
  • Department of the Navy Guidance on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models
    This memorandum from the Department of the Navy offers interim guardrail guidance when considering the use of GenAI. It stresses the importance of keeping human decision makers in the loop.
  • Establishment of Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer Generative Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models Task Force, Task Force Lima
    This memorandum outlines the mission, objectives, and organization of Task Force Lima, as well as the roles and responsibilities of the Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO) and other stakeholders. The task force is led by the CDAO, which serves as the successor organization to the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC), reporting directly to the Deputy Secretary of Defense.
     
  • DoD Interim Guidance on Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence
    CDAO released guidance that recognizes the importance of using generative AI tools while also stressing its limits and risks and our responsibilities. This open-source summary distills four main points from the guidance: risk assessment and mitigation, input restrictions, accountability, and citation and disclosure.
  • Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence
    This executive order stresses the importance of learning about and benefiting from AI use, while requiring AI use to be done in a safe, secure, and responsible manner, based on eight guiding principles and priorities:
     
    • Safe and secure use and platforms
    • Responsible innovation, competition, and collaboration
    • Responsible development committed to supporting American workers
    • Policies consistent with advancing equity and civil rights
    • Protection of users and consumers
    • Protection of privacy and civil liberties
    • Manage risk and benefits
    • Leadership for global societal, economic, and technological progress
  • Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy, U.S. Dept. of State
    This political declaration on responsible military use of artificial intelligence and autonomy aims to ensure ethical development, deployment, and use of military artificial intelligence. The document outlines best practices for developing, maintaining, and using artificial intelligence by states.
