null NSA Scott Jasper on Russian Influence on the American Vote

October 30, 2020

In a recent and timely article, published by The Conversation, NSA Dr. Scott Jasper reflects on Russia’s influence on America’s upcoming 2020 election. He makes suggestions of what to watch for, such as ransomware attacks or announcements seeking to influence voters. Another serious issue is sophisticated disinformation attacks. The goal of such attacks is to make it difficult for Americans to discern what is real and what is not and to sow division among Americans (pre- and possibly post-election). The good news is U.S. agencies are more ready this election cycle to sound the alarm then they were in the previous cycle. Technology platforms (e.g., Facebook and Google) have also joined the fight. Dr. Jasper closes the article with a very sound bit of advice, “Voters can protect themselves by being skeptical of urgent or alarming claims in online media, and by remembering that they may be targets of disinformation campaigns.”
