Faculty Research Presentation: Harrison Schramm, "Small Computers, Big Jobs"
Harrison Schramm presents his work titled "Small Computers, Big Jobs".
Abstract:
While there is a lot of hype and focus on ‘Big Data’ and “Large Language Models” such as Chat-GPT, there exist considerable opportunities in ‘small’ computing and ‘small language models’. This talk will focus on the task of building, installing, and running a chat model on a small platform. This will show the possibilities of single-board computers, with AI applications as a motivating example. Depending on the interest of the audience, I may also show some examples of ‘transfer learning’, where a large language model is downloaded from a source, and then specifically adapted to an end-user’s needs. The ultimate goal is to show how smaller computers can perform tasks that were previously only considered for large computers. The highlight will be hands-on demonstrations of these computers. Currently, I have two up and running.
