Brig. Gen. Richard Lake
Brig. Gen. Richard Lake, Director of Intelligence for Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Washington, D.C., speaks to students during a Secretary of the Navy Guest Lecture (SGL) April 21 in King Hall. Lake’s lecture focused on current and future global challenges, with detailed discussions about Iraq, Afghanistan, global population growth, technology and irregular warfare.

Lake emphasized the need for greater education, training, flexibility and diversity to more effectively combat complex global threats. “We have got to change our mind-set …and to do this we’ve got to train and educate our individuals and units,” he asserted. “That’s why your experience here is incredibly important, because you’re getting the education portion.”

During his concluding remarks, Lake reminded students that people are more important than technology. “We have to equip the people and not man the equipment,” he said, “because the people are what’s going to make a difference.”
